Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I feel compelled to write and alert my neighbors to the stakes this election. While the media concentrates on oil spills, immigration, and health care at the national level, the issues here at home deserve just as much attention.
Ohio has a projected $8 billion budget deficit, the state teacher pension fund has $40 billion in unfunded liabilities, and we've lost 640,000 jobs over two decades.
Republicans blame the Strickland administration, and Democrats blame the economy. Truth is, Ohio's been losing jobs and population for decades - under Republicans and Democrats - and even when the national economy was bright. While Ohio's spending has increased for 33 straight years, Ohio is ranked 45th in business climate by the American Legislative Exchange Council and 47th in competitiveness by the American Tax Foundation. At last count, there are only 50 states.
So, instead of an economic problem, what we have is a leadership problem. I've personally had enough of the personal attacks and partisan gamesmanship. It's time to call-out each and every candidate on the issues.
For those who find it hard to vote for someone outside the party elite, a state race is a good place to test your comfort zone and take a principled stand - especially with the dire straights here in Ohio. This is why I'm a first time candidate running for state office outside the two major parties and the only candidate in my race brave enough to make the tough choices.
Don't take my word for it. Take me to task on the issues and demand the same of my opponents. The stakes are just too darn high this year.
